After suffering from a mild stroke, famous baseball announcer and grandfather Charley McCabe (Rod Steiger) faces the certainty of being placed into a retirement home by his family. Driven by the haunting words of his deceased wife, Barbara (Mary Boucher), the emptiness in his heart, and the knowledge that his time on earth is coming to an end, Charley decides he must find his long-estranged son, Tomas (Michael Pare). Mustering up his best stubborn-old-man attitude, Charley decides to "run away from home" and complete his life's journey to re-connect with his son and fulfill the promise he made to his be-loved wife. To his dismay, Charley finds himself accompanied by the one who adores and loves him the most - his granddaughter Biddy (Corina Marie) and her "stow-away" little brother Jeremy (Jeffrey William Tott). Embarking on a quest that has no certain destination, they are assisted Par Sundquist (Jamie Farr) and Onida Roy (Sally Struthers), which help them find their way.
Charley's long-silenced family secret, which drove his son into exile and tore his family apart, resurfaces in a cascade of emotion. Surprisingly, it seems that only the irony of life can heal the casualties of love. Through his important journey, Charley faces his past, learns to let go ... and peacefully finds his way home.
